Mercer Island

Residential

Remodel 1980s Home

This Mercer Island home was tasteful in its day, but its new owners were ready to bring it into the 21st century. Away went the ornate Georgian columns and walls that blocked views. Dyna replaced these with an open floor plan and a simple modern aesthetic. The large custom fir and metal front door pivots onto a grand entry. An exposed steel staircase with horizontal cable railing leads to updated bedrooms upstairs and down. On the main level, the kitchen overlooks the living and dining areas and panoramic views of Lake Washington. With stunning and sturdy materials such as poured concrete counters and slabs of Chinese elm supported by custom steel work, the kitchen is made for both entertaining and living. Reclaimed fir posts with exposed structural steel elements and walnut floors contrast with smooth tiled floors and low profile aluminum windows. Outside, ulin siding and wood columns modernize and add interest to the traditional stonework.
